Course Description:
This apprenticeship course provides students with the skills and abilities appropriate to meet the needs of the various sectors within the nursery industry. Study is undertaken in one of the streams of nursery in which a person is working in. The essential units are designed to develop the students’ generic workplace skills, which are highly valued by employers. These skills include understanding industry and health and safety requirements, working in teams and communication skills.
Aims & Objectives:
This course is based upon industry identified Horticulture Training Package competencies. It aims to provide the student with the knowledge and skills needed to operate successfully at trade level in commercial wholesale nurseries.
Course Structure:
A total of 16 units of competency must be completed, including one compulsory unit.

Compulsory unit RTE3713A Carry out workplace OHS procedures Additional units RTC3016A Provide information on plants and their culture RTC3401A Control weeds RTE3819A Process customer complaints RTC3404A Control plant pests, diseases and disorders RTF3026A Receive and dispatch plants and other nursery products RTE3714A Maintain and monitor environmental work practices RTF3014A Implement a propagation plan RTF3012A Implement a plant nutrition program RTF3021A Maintain nursery plants RTF3503A Sample soils and analyse results RTE3611A Operate pressurised irrigation systems RTF3005A Deliver and promote sales of plants RTF3036A Plan and establish plant displays RTC3704A Prepare & apply Chemicals RTE3605A Troubleshoot irrigation systems Note: Some electives from other Industry streams (i.e. Landscape, Nursery and Flowergrowing) may be substituted if they are more appropriate for a particular enterprise. The Department will determine in any year which electives will be offered, based on available resources and minimum class sizes.
Career Opportunities:
Employment as qualified nursery person or further study.
Professional recognition:
This is a national qualification and is formally recognised by the Nursery Industries Association of Australia and its affiliates.
Entry Requirements:
Applicants must be 15 years or over, have appropriate numeracy and literacy skills and have secured full or part-time employment as a nursery apprentice.
Credit Transfer:
Applicants with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this course may be granted 'credit' and/or entry to the course with 'advanced standing'. University policies apply and applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis. Pathways (articulation):
An advanced credit transfer system, known as the Pathways program, is in place at Swinburne. Through Pathways, students with one or more of a wide range of post-secondary qualifications (both local and international) can gain entry into a course with advanced standing. Certain unit requirements must be met and an acceptable standard of results achieved in order to gain admission and for maximum credit to be granted. Recognition of Prior Learning:
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training. Course Fees:
In 2008, fees payable by students enrolled in TAFE courses at Swinburne may be made up of the following: Tuition Fee Amenities Fee Materials costs (where applicable) Ancillary costs (where applicable) TAFE Tuition Fees are set by the Victorian Government. The Tuition Fee for government-funded TAFE courses in 2008 is $1.37 for each nominal enrolled contact hour in a 12-month continuous enrolment period, with a minimum fee of $55 and a maximum fee of $877 (equivalent to 640 hours). Some Victorian Government-funded students may be entitled to a concession on their Tuition Fee. Students eligible for concession pay a maximum Tuition Fee of $55.
