Course Description:
This apprenticeship provides students with the underpinning knowledge and skills appropriate to meet the needs of the landscape industry. The elective units make up the substantive course content and will develop the essential specific skills required to meet industry tradesperson requirements. The essential units are designed to develop the students’ generic workplace skills which are so highly valued by employers. These include understanding industry and health and safety requirements, working in teams, and communication skills. Collecting, analysing and organising information, solving problems and using technology are also important attributes for employees in the landscape industry. These key competencies, along with others, are integrated into the learning and practical activities.
Aims & Objectives:
This course is based upon industry identified Horticulture Training Package competencies. It aims to provide the student with the knowledge and skills needed to operate successfully at trade level in the landscape industry.
Course Structure:
A total of 16 units of competency must be completed, including eight compulsory units.

Compulsory units BCG3115A Lay segmental/unit paving RTC3206A Erect timber structures and features RTE3601A Install irrigation systems RTF3203A Construct brick and/or block-structures and features RTF3217A Set out site for construction work RTF3219A Construct block or stone structures and features RTE3713A Carry out workplace OHS procedures RTF3204A Construct concrete structures and feature RTE3713A Carry out workplace OH & S procedures Additional units RTC3016A Provide information on plants and their culture RTC3805A Co-ordinate work site activities RTF3216A Install water features RTC3310A Operate specialised machinery and equipment RTE3010A Establish turf RTF3011A Implement plant establishment RTE3305A Install and terminate extra low voltage wiring systems BSBCMN306A Produce business documents Note: Some electives from other industry streams may be substituted if they are more appropriate for a particular enterprise. The department will determine in any year which electives will be offered, based on available resources and minimum class sizes.

Employment as qualified landscaper or further study.
Professional recognition:
This is a national qualification which is formally recognised throughout Australia.
Entry Requirements:
Applicants must be 15 years or over and have appropriate numeracy and literacy skills and have secured full or part-time employment as a landscape apprentice.
Credit Transfer:
Applicants with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this course may be granted 'credit' and/or entry to the course with 'advanced standing'. University policies apply and applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis. Pathways (articulation):
An advanced credit transfer system, known as the Pathways program, is in place at Swinburne. Through Pathways, students with one or more of a wide range of post-secondary qualifications (both local and international) can gain entry into a course with advanced standing. Certain unit requirements must be met and an acceptable standard of results achieved in order to gain admission and for maximum credit to be granted. Recognition of Prior Learning:
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training. Further details for students considering TAFE courses can be found on the RPL website.
Course Fees:
In 2008, fees payable by students enrolled in TAFE courses at Swinburne may be made up of the following: Tuition Fee Amenities Fee Materials costs (where applicable) Ancillary costs (where applicable) TAFE Tuition Fees are set by the Victorian Government. The Tuition Fee for government-funded TAFE courses in 2008 is $1.37 for each nominal enrolled contact hour in a 12-month continuous enrolment period, with a minimum fee of $55 and a maximum fee of $877 (equivalent to 640 hours). Some Victorian Government-funded students may be entitled to a concession on their Tuition Fee. Students eligible for concession pay a maximum Tuition Fee of $55.
