Alternatively, prospective domestic applicants for  Master of Psychology (Health Psychology) may wish consider the Master of Psychology (Counselling Psychology)),  Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology)),  Doctor of Psychology (Counselling Psychology)) and Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) ) programs.

Prospective international students may wish to consider the Master of Psychology (Counselling Psychology)), Doctor of Psychology (Counselling Psychology)) and Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology)) programs in lieu of the Master of Psychology (Health Psychology)..

The Faculty of Life and Social Sciences offers to currently enrolled students a Master of Psychology in Health Psychology degree program by coursework, practicum and minor thesis. Health psychologists may engage in health research, health promotion, disease prevention, health care interventions, education, rehabilitation, and public health policy formulation. The program was designed to provide a broad range of professional skills which reflect the diversity of practice in health psychology. Graduates are eligible for registration as psychologists in Victoria, membership of the Australian Psychological Society, and after appropriate supervised practice, membership of the APS College of Health Psychologists.

The objectives of the course are:
  • To provide core professional skills relevant to practicing psychologists.
  • To provide specialist knowledge in the field of health psychology.
  • To provide practical experience in a variety of health-related settings.
  • To consolidate research skills through the experience of conducting a research project.

The Master of Psychology (Health Psychology) program is no longer available.   NB: Program structure information is provided for currently enrolled students only.

The structure of the program follows the guidelines of the Australian Psychological Society.
Currently, there are three course components: coursework (50%), placements (25%) and an
empirical research project (25%).

All units of study are valued at 12.5 credit points each.

Four of the coursework units comprise advanced study in areas central to the practice of health
psychology:

  • Epidemiology for Health Psychologists
  • Public Health Policy
Four of the coursework units comprise core skills for professional psychologists:
  • Human Services Research and Evaluation/Program Evaluation for Psychologists 
  • Counselling Theory and Skills
  • Psychological Assessment /Advanced Psychological Assessment
  • Professional, Ethical and Legal Issues  

Students also engage in supervised health placements and complete a 10,000 word thesis.

This program was accredited in 2004 by the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and meets the requirements of the APS College of Health Psychologists for academic training. It also provides a direct means of professional registration by the Psychologists’ Registration Board of Victoria. The MPsych degree is the most desirable qualification sought by prospective employers of health psychologists.
