The Advanced Diploma of Screen (Digital Film and Television) forms part of the Film, Television, Radio and Multimedia Training Package. It trains students in creative specialisation and production management in the film and television industry. The course provides participants with an in-depth knowledge of the film making production process and its related technical aspects of camera operation, sound recording, non-linear editing, script development and interpretation, and project management. The delivery also includes research projects and media theory, which will enable students to develop their productions within a broader cultural and theoretical context.

Semester 1

Pre-Production 1 (50 hrs)
This subject provides a theoretical guide to the principles of film and television practice and addresses areas such as pre-visualisation, storyboarding, and production pathways.

Media Theory 1 (50 hrs)
To introduce students to concepts, theories and methodologies related to film and television, providing an understanding of the language. Explores the process of communicating through the moving image.

Scriptwriting + Directing 1 (50 hrs)

This subject investigates the scriptwriting process within the context of industry development and script formats. Students will address areas such as ideas development, narrative structure, characterisation and visual storytelling.

Multimedia Design 1 (50 hrs)

To extend student’s knowledge of digital design production environments including the appropriate use of hardware and operating systems, and the management of static image manipulation software and how it relates to digital video production. This subject also includes the appropriate use of hardware and operating systems.

Film + TV Technology 1 (50 hrs)

This subject focuses specifically on digital film and video production outcomes. It provides students with a comprehensive and practical introduction to industry standard production equipment and delivery formats. It also offers an opportunity for students to consolidate these principles and techniques in a practice-based production outcome.

Semester 2

Pre-Production 2 (50 hrs)
To instil the practice of storytelling and ideas development as a fundamental component of the creative filmmaking process and an understanding of support networks, funding bodies and the funding application process.

This subject investigates the process of new project development, scripting for documentary, television commercials, music clips and narrative.

Multimedia Design 2 (50 hrs)
To further skill students in developing and implementing designs for a variety of linear and interactive outcomes including computer based interactive, (DVD) construction and ipod/mobile phone delivery.

Covers production principles and techniques including Lighting and Cinematography and Sound Recording. Also covers an introduction to special effects techniques.

Semester 3

Media Theory 2 (50 hrs)

This subject provides a theoretical guide to key issues relating to film and television. The subject also aims to provide the student with frameworks for understanding the genealogies of film and television and their relationships to developing technologies.

Research Project 1 (50 hrs)
Utilising the accumulated knowledge from earlier learning segments, each student will undertake individual research and production for a defined product outcome in one area chosen from a selection of film and television areas.

Scriptwriting + Directing 3 (50 hrs)
Students are provided with a thorough understanding of the director’s role within the production process and their relationship with key-creative elements. Students are introduced to areas such as directing actors, acting techniques and directing a crew.

Film Practical (50 hrs)
This subject introduces 16mm film production. Including cameras, film stock types, lighting, lenses, and production pathways.

Post Production (50 hrs)
To further consolidate the skills and techniques developed in the previous Film + TV Tech subjects with and emphasis on special effect techniques.

Semester 4

Research Project 2 (150hrs)
Provides a structured industry environment in which students can further develop skills and expertise within their chosen area of specialization. This subject has an emphasis on team work and working within a film crew from start to finish.

TV Studio Production (50 hrs)

Provides a structured industry environment, which gives students practical experience and knowledge within a working TV Studio.
CUFPOP15AZ Produce pre-recorded programs

Screen Production (40 hrs)

The aim of this particular subject is to skill students in developing and arranging their graduate exhibition. They undertake things such as, fundraising, promotions and event management.

Employment may be found in the film and television industry or as independent producers, directors, editors and special effects developers.

Graduates of this course may enter with 'advanced standing' into Swinburne's Bachelor of Design (Multimedia Design) or the Bachelor of Film and Television.

Successful completion of at least the first year of an approved art, design or media course at a post-VCE level is preferred.
 
Applicants are required to present a folio of work at interview to be considered for application.
 
Mature age applicants with some industry experience are also eligible to apply.
 
Please note this course requires a high level of written and verbal communication skills.

Applicants with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this course may be granted 'credit' and/or entry to the course with 'advanced standing'. University policies apply and applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis. An advanced credit transfer system, known as the Pathways program, is in place at Swinburne. Through Pathways, graduates of this course may gain entry to Swinburne's Bachelor of Design (Multimedia Design) or the Bachelor of Film & Television with advanced standing. Certain subject requirements must be met and an acceptable standard of results achieved in order to gain admission and for maximum credit to be granted. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training.

TAFE course fees are set by the government, and from 1 January 2008 the fees payable by students enrolled in the TAFE division may be made up of the following:

  • Tuition fee ($1.37 per student contact hour)
  • Amenities fee
  • Materials charges (where applicable)
  • Ancillary fee (where applicable)
