Course Description:
The Diploma of Fire Technology provides knowledge and skills for those wishing to progress to supervisory and managerial roles in fire protection design, fire technology design or essential services organisations.
Course Structure:
Completion of Certificate IV in Fire Technology modules two (2) streams are available: A) Design Stream B) Management of essential services stream The design stream is seven (7) core units plus three (3) electives. The management of essential services stream is eleven (11) core units plus three (3) electives. Elective modules are subject to availability and demand.

Employment as practitioners in fire protection, fire safety, insurance and fire systems design.
Entry Requirements:
Satisfactory completion of an appropriate Victorian Year 12 or its equivalent, or mature age. Applicants should be able to demonstrate the following competencies: Reading and writing at a level that displays emerging technical knowledge and vocabulary, a developing personal style, increasing complexity in language use and an ability to participate in extended learning exchanges and exploratory discussions to solve problems. Ability to use and analyse everyday data, relation and pattern, number, measurement and shape. Completion of Certificate IV in Fire Technology core and elective units (or first year Swinburne students) Mature-age applicants, particularly those with experience in the industry, will be considered favourably. Students who have already successfully completed relevant studies may be eligible for exemptions in some subjects.

Credit Transfer:
Applicants with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this course may be granted 'credit' and/or entry to the course with 'advanced standing'. University policies apply and applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis. Pathways (articulation):
An advanced credit transfer system, known as the Pathways program, is in place at Swinburne. Through Pathways, students with one or more of a wide range of post-secondary qualifications (both local and international) can gain entry into a course with advanced standing. Certain subject requirements must be met and an acceptable standard of results achieved in order to gain admission and for maximum credit to be granted. Recognition of Prior Learning:
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training. Course Fees:
TAFE course fees are set by the government, and from 1 January 2008 the fees payable by students enrolled in the TAFE division may be made up of the following: Tuition fee ($1.37 per student contact hour) Amenities fee Materials charges (where applicable) Ancillary fee (where applicable) Concession fees apply for health care card holders. Applications for full-time, first year places (or for Certificate IV in Fire Technology level) must be made through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC).
