Course Description:
In 2009 this course will be replaced with the Diploma of Graphic Design. This course prepares students to create and execute design concepts efficiently and economically and to be capable of using traditional media and computer technology to assemble 'camera ready' and digital artwork with the necessary understanding of graphic reproduction techniques. Web design and production is also an important facet of the course.
Aims & Objectives:
The course aims to provide participants with the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to qualify to work as graphic designers across a wide range of graphic design industry occupations.
Units of Study:
Year one Layout Create page layouts in response to a brief Typography 1 Produce typography in response to a brief Design 1 Apply the elements and principles of design OHS Follow health, safety and security procedures Interactive Graphics Apply the principles of visual design and communication to the development of multimedia product Drawing Use drawing techniques to represent and communicate concepts Critical Analysis Apply research and critical analysis to inform artistic practise Digital Production 1 Produce and create graphics in response to a brief Web Design Produce files for Multimedia production and display Sustainability Analyse and implement sustainable work practices Year two Business 1 Promote the business Business 2 Address legal and administrative requirements Manage creative and professional self Design 2 Produce a concept from s given brief Finished Art Produce artwork from concept to finished art 2D Design Create design concepts to produce 2D artwork to finished art stage Practical Placement Plan and implement a project in the workplace 3D Design Create design concepts to produce 3D artwork to finished art stage Illustration Produce artwork from concept to final art production Web design 2 Create web pages with multimedia Digital Production 2 Produce and scan complex images for reproduction Animation Create 2 D digital animation
Career Opportunities:
Career opportunities exist within advertising agencies and the graphic design and finished art studios which service them. Employment can also be found in a number of other areas of the industry, such as publishing (newspaper and magazines), retail advertising, large corporations, printers, film and television production houses, educational institutions and government departments.
Graduate Attributes:
Graduates are good communicators, both visually and verbally with strong teamwork and problem-solving skills. They are self-motivated and organised with exceptional computer and technical skills.
Entry Requirements:
Successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent. Applicants will also be required to attend an interview and present a folio of work.
Pathways (articulation):
An advanced credit transfer system, known as the Pathways program, is in place at Swinburne. Through Pathways, students with one or more of a wide range of post-secondary qualifications (both local and international) can gain entry into a course with advanced standing. Certain subject requirements must be met and an acceptable standard of results achieved in order to gain admission and for maximum credit to be granted. Recognition of Prior Learning:
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training. Course Fees:
TAFE course fees are set by the government, and from 1 January 2008 the fees payable by students enrolled in the TAFE division may be made up of the following: Tuition fee ($1.37 per student contact hour) Amenities fee Materials charges (where applicable) Ancillary fee (where applicable) Concession fees apply for health care card holders.
